Cougars defeat young Hawks 8-1
TCS Cougars swept the season series on Wednesday with a convincing 8-1 victory. The Howard Hawks are rebuilding after losing several upperclassmen and missing last year entirely due to Covid. This set the stage for the entire Cougar squad to get ample playing time to improve their skills for the final two weeks before their state playoff game on 10/1. It also gave kids another chance to play at different positions.
Aidan Briggs started at striker and immediately made an impact with his size. Gabe Belden booted a corner kick from the right side and Briggs made his first header in his career to take the early 1-0 lead. Alex Hogg followed by scoring off a nice cross from Aidan. Sam Bayer then got in the mix with a goal off a missed shot. Sam hung around the middle of the box and as the ball deflected to him, Bayer kneed it in. After a mass substitution the Cougars scored three more quick goals. Byman came in and scored two straight followed by a sweet left boot from Aiden Spies. At the half, the score was 6-1 as Howard scored just before halftime.
In the second half Coach Vazquez preached the importance of ball movement continuing to practice good habits of controlling time of possession. The Cougars will need to improve in this area to give Furtah Prep a better game next week. TCS did work on this and at times it looked impressive. By doing so Gabe Belden converted after moving the ball around for a few minutes. Then Byman assisted Ben Johnson for the Cougars final goal of the afternoon. Cottage went on to win 8-1 and now are 6-2 overall. They finish this week with their only match versus Cumberland Academy. It is a league game in the AAC so will count twice as neither team could find another date for the second contest.
Proud Cougar Coaches,
