Monsoon Flag Football Game Cougars versus Mustangs
The Cougars had their last regular season game on Tuesday March 26. The Cougars went out on a rainy day to take on their rival, Mill Springs.
The game was rocky in the first half. The rain made it hard to throw and catch the ball for both teams.
The Cougars started with the ball. Jackson Barnes found a couple quick completions to Maxwell Lagan and Jack Kane to start the game. However, the rain was too much, and the Cougars couldn’t find a completion on 3rd and 4th down. Cougars turn the ball over on downs.
Mill Springs offense took the field ready to face the Cottage School defense, led by Weston Kershner and Andrew Dorsey. On Mill Springs first play they had a nice completion but Weston was there to make a quick tackle. On second down Davis Bradley came up with a huge sack! Mill Springs found another completion on 3rd down but Alyssa Briggs was there to make the tackle and give Mill Springs a short gain. On 4th down Mill Springs threw up a deep pass but Andrew Dorsey was there to make his first interception of the game.
Cottage offense was still struggling with the rain and couldn’t get anything started. After 4 incompletions, the Cougars turned the ball over on downs.
Mill Springs offense had similar struggles on the first two plays but came up with a long touchdown play to put Mill Springs up 6 to nothing.
Cougars’ offense came out ready to fight back, Jackson again makes two quick completions to start the drive. First completion was to Andrew and the second was to Jack Kane. However, the rain got to the offense again and the Cougars turned the ball over on downs.
Weston and the Cougar defense knew they had a big series in front of them. With pressure from Davis and great lock down defense from Alyssa Briggs, Gabe Belden, and Jack Kane, the Mill Springs offense couldn’t make a completion. After 4 drops, Mill Springs turned the ball over on downs.
Since the Cougars defense stepped up, it was time for the offense to do the same. Jackson Barnes finds Colin Barlow for two quick completions. On 3rd down the ball slipped through our hands but Jack Kane made a big play on 4th down to give the Cougars a 1st down. Then Jackson finds Maxwell Lagan for a 30-yard touchdown!
The game is tied at 6 to 6.
Cottage School defense now on the field and they needed to make a few stops before halftime. After a incompletion, Jack Kane and Andrew Dorsey make two tackles to give Mill Springs a 4th a short. On 4th down Davis Bradley comes up with a big interception to end the half.
Halftime (score is 6 to 6)
Mill Springs started with the ball. On the first play of the second half Mill Springs tries to go deep but Andrew Dorsey is there to make his second interception of the game!
Cougars’ offense started out with great field position from Andrew’s interception. It only takes two plays, one to Colin and then a touchdown to Jack Kane, to score. Cougars now lead Mill Springs 12 to 6. The rain started to really come down for the rest of the game.
Mill Springs struggled as the rain continued and they had a quick 4 and out on offense.
Cottage has now figured out how to play in the rain a little better. After a couple short passes Jackson goes deep to Andrew Dorsey for the touchdown. After the extra point the Cougars now lead Mill Springs 20 to 6.
Mill Springs never gave up and finally got something going on offense. They moved the ball down the field for a score of their own. Cougars still have the lead 20 to 12 but Mill Springs is only down a touchdown now with about 5 minutes left in the game.
The Cougars offense took the field knowing that this series decides the game. Jackson finds Colin on 1st down for 20 yards. Then Weston comes up with a 10-yard gain and a 1st down. Another bomb to Andrew Dorsey for 60 yards and the Cougars are about 5 yards from the endzone and sealing the deal. Jackson scrambles and finds Weston in the back of the endzone to put the game out of reach.
Cougars win, Cougars win!! Final score 28-12 Cottage School
