TCS begins season with lots to work on, losing 52-13 to St. John Bosco
11/1/2023: The Cottage School Cougars traveled to Cumming, GA to take on the Saint John Bosco Greywolves in their first contest of the season. It marks the first ever match up and did not bode well for the Cougars. The Greywolves jumped on the tan cats early and often and never looked back in a 52-13 victory.
The GAPPS conference school, Saint John Bosco set the tone on both ends of the floor as the more aggressive, energetic bunch. Their speed, athleticism and toughness made it too difficult for TCS to figure out. The Greywolves raced to a 17-0 start before a Cougar connected on a free throw. Cottage could only muster three more free throws and connected on zero field goals, scoring just four points at the halftime break. Matter of fact, the Cougars shot just .08 percent from the floor. Never has a varsity Cougar team shot this low of a percentage for a game or score just 13 points under Coach Briggs since he took over the program 19 years ago.
The second half was more of the same as Saint John Bosco went on to win 52-13. Coach Briggs spoke after the game. “Making no excuses, they are better than us for sure at this point in the season, but playing teams with this kind of toughness and speed early on is always hard for us. We really have only had one practice with the entire team and it showed. Suroy and I always want to play teams like this early, so the boys understand how important all the simple things we go over from day one. We will play the same team in 29 days and look forward to seeing how much we can improve in a month. All of us enjoy the challenge!”
The Cougars will have a day to work on it before their home opener on Friday versus an even tougher opponent, the Fulton Science Academy Mustangs.
Games Notes:
William McGuire played his first game as a Cougar with only one day of practice and came in with some energy. He also connected on a free throw for his first ever basketball point!
Weston Kershner led the team with 3 steals.
Andrew Dorsey led the team with 4 points.
The Cougars shot 7-10 from the charity stripe.
