TCS Archery – 2024 GIAA Varsity Archery State Tournament – 01/13/24
The Varsity Archery team’s most important event of the season began with a rain soaked four hour (230 mile) trek to Statesboro, GA Friday evening. After a night stay and breakfast buffet, it was over to the Georgia Southern University Shooting Sports Education Center for the competition. The GIAA tournament is a unique and challenging event. All other tournaments during the season are either a bullseye or a 3D tournament. The GIAA tournament combines both bullseye and 3D – essentially two tournaments in one.
The morning started with the 3D event. The 3D flights concluded with the team performance close to that of last year. After the tradition of lunch at Cook Out, it was back to finish the tournament. Upon completion of the bullseye flights, the team awaited the results – a 4th place finish. It was quite evident that this year’s event fielded greater competition. This team finish was disappointing for those archers who returned from the state runner up team of a year ago and masked the actual achievement of this year’s team. This year’s team was substantially less experienced than last year’s heavily ladened Junior/Senior team. In addition, this year’s team competed with only half a week of practice that followed essentially a three week layoff for exams and winter break. Despite these facts, this year’s team performed exceptionally well posting the second highest GIAA score in team history with half the archers setting personal bests. The experience that the weekend brought as well as the consistent improvement of so many archers bodes well for the program’s continued success.
