Cougars Run Into Tough Heritage Prep Team, Lose 61-35
On Thursday night, the Cougars traveled to Midtown Atlanta to play a game against an impressive, uptempo team from Heritage Prep. The game was filled with outstanding play from both sides, but eventually the depth and exceptional transition play of the Heritage Rams overwhelmed Cottage with a second half run that put the game out of reach.
The game began at a furious pace with Cottage jumping out to a quick lead, only to see the Rams fight back and take a 12-8 lead by the end of the first quarter. Both teams seemed bent on playing fast-paced basketball, throwing full court traps at each other and forcing turnovers on both sides. Cottage was able to stay within striking distance at the half thanks to the continued outstanding play of Alyssa Briggs, who finished with 25 points, 12 rebounds and 4 steals. She was particularly effective from the free throw line, going 9 for 11 from the charity stripe.
In spite of a difficult second half, the Cougars showed signs of significant improvement. Finley Love tirelessly fought to grab 5 steals in the game in spite of having to contend with the overwhelming size and speed of the Rams. Gabby Pressnall showed flashes of defensive brilliance and a knack for scoring in transition, scoring 6 points in the game. Bonnie Bolton-Hogg continues to terrorize opposing offenses, adding another 4 steal night to her rapidly developing resume as a lockdown defender.
The Cougars are back in action tonight against AAC conference opponent Tapestry. The Cougars are currently undefeated in conference play and look to run their league record to 4-0 with a win on Friday.
