Swim Season Update Report #3
Breaking into the new year the swim team picked up right where they left off in 2020 despite being severely short-handed. Traveling to Watkinsville for another regional GISA meet the team tried their luck against The Westfield School and Citizens Christian Academy. While the scores did not quite go in favor of the Cougar skeleton crew, there were some big accomplishments that must not be overlooked.
The Lone Ranger
Going into this week’s meet, the Varsity Cougars’ hopes for victory rested solely on the shoulders of sophomore Anna Morris. Being a veteran on the team this was nothing that Miss Anna could not handle as she took it upon herself to hold her own against two powerful opponents. When the bubbles finally settled in the pool Anna found herself with not 1, not 2, but 3-yes THREE- first place finishes on the day! Anna wiped out the competition in the 50 freestyle, the 100 freestyle and the 100 backstroke making her the only swimmer to do so throughout the entire meet and earning her swimmer of the day according to meet hosts.
Middle School State Numbers Rising
Diving into the pool before Watkinsville, the swim team as a whole had a total of 9 swimmers qualified for 22 events in the GISA State Championships at the end of the month. Pulling out of the parking lot however, that number had increased to 10 swimmers in 22 events as the team welcomed 7th grader Camryn Pursley to the state roster in the 50 backstroke and saw her 7th grade classmate, Alaina Larson, add two more events to her resume, the 50 freestyle and the 100 freestyle.
Up Next
Following the events of this meet the team will make more waves next week with meets on Thursday at Georgia Tech and Saturday at the AAC Championships against Howard.
