Flag Football Cougars Versus Mustangs

Cougar Athletics, Flag Football

Are you ready for some Football?

The Cougars were hungry to play again after their first game and they showed it in the first half. The Cougars came out firing on all cylinders and scored on their first drive with a long pass from QB Blake L to WR (first time offensive starter) Nick E. After a great week of practice, the coaches decided to see what Nick could do in the game and he showed up big. The offense for the Cougars rolled along very smoothly all first half. Big plays were made by many players because Blake L did a great job spreading the ball out. Captain Mike J (only Sr this year) had a great game at center and scored his first touchdown of the season. While our other captain Aidan B showed off his ability to make plays throughout the first half with some good route running and good running after the catch. Ben J and Alex H were running great routes and made some big catches in the first half as well.

The Cougars defense in the first half was a lot like the Cougar offense. The Cougars shut out Mill Springs in the first half. Braden started at safety for the first time this year and did a great job leading his team as the QB of the defense. He made sure teammates were guarding the right guys and did a great job being there to help his teammates when they needed it. Again, Captain Aidan B showed everyone that they should not throw the ball his way recording 3 interceptions during the game. Alex H, Jack M, and Ben B made sure they locked down their men on defense and did not let Mill Springs record too many receptions in the first half. Mill Springs QB could never plant his feet and throw because Sam B was blitzing like a mad man. His relentless effort to get after the QB helped the Cougars go in at half up 28 to 0.

At the start of the second half, the younger Cougars got their turn to show what they can do. Defensively, Gabe Y, came away with his first interception of the year and had a nice return after the interception as well. Christian D, Braxton H, and Eric T did a wonderful job blitzing the QB. Eric T also contributed some big open field tackles during the second half. Ben B did well locking down any wide receiver he was guarding and almost came away with an interception. Hayden C, Reese S, and Jack M also contributed some great defense and man on man coverage.

Offensively, the second half saw a couple different QBs. Jack M and Ben B took majority of the snaps and did a good job moving around in the pocket. Jack M recorded his first touchdown pass early in the second half to help the Cougars go up 34 – 7.

Mill Springs was not done and put up a good fight in the second half. They clawed and didn’t give up and before the Cougars knew it they were in a battle. Mill Spring made a couple of interceptions and some big plays on offense which brought the score to 34 – 28 TCS. The Cougars did not back down and Blake helped his team with some great play calling and passing to get the Cougars back up by two scores making the game 40 – 28. The defense of the Cougars locked down the wide receivers of Mill Springs and Mill Springs turned the ball over, but the Cougars were deep in their own territory and a first down would guarantee the win. After three plays the Cougars have not moved the ball, but on 4th down Aidan B makes a great run after the catch and the Cougars have the first down, or so we thought. Flag on the play brought the ball back and backed up the Cougars another 5 yards. Not wanting to turn the ball over on their side of the field the Cougars knew they needed a big play. Blake snapped the ball and rolled out to his right. As he rolled out he noticed Alex H and threw a nice 40 yard bomb. Alex H jumped over two Mill Spring’s defenders, making Alex Hogg player of the game. First down Cougars, First down Cougars!!!

The Cougars run a couple more plays to run off the rest of the clock. Cougars win 40 to 28 making the Cougars 2 and 0 on the season.
