Cougars Chase Down Terriers for 50-41 Victory
11/13/20: The Cottage School Cougars hosted GAPPS opponent Lyndon Academy on Friday the 13th. It was banner night for the Cougars as they “blacked out” the gym wearing their new black and purple uniforms. Just before game time fans and players celebrated the AAC championship season from a year ago, shining a light on the 2020 banner. TCS started slow but later showed the defense that led them to last year’s title is still what may guide them to another.
Ahead just 24-20 at halftime, the Cougars held the Terriers to just three third quarter points in route to a 50-41 win.
Lyndon Academy tried to play spoiler on banner night showing no fear. Their dynamic two guard front provided issues to TCS early. Both #0 (Beatty) and #10 (Hughes) attacked the Cougar defense causing early foul issues as they held a 12-11 lead after the first period.
Cottages’ junior guard, Aidan Briggs met their match and led his team in the second frame scoring seven points to take control of the first half with the 24-20 edge.
Coach Briggs spoke at intermission; “Suroy and I like how hard the boys are playing but we need to calm down when the ball is in our possession. We are rushing, carelessly turning the ball over putting more pressure on us. Once we are in control offensively, our defense can be more constant and we can go on a run.”
The message was received well as TCS had seven different players score points, proving better ball movement. In doing so, the Cougars were able to put the clamps on the Terriers holding them to just three points over the next ten minutes. The run Coach Briggs was looking for came, extending their lead to almost twenty points ahead 42-23 early in the fourth. Cottage held off a Lyndon full court press and are now 2-0 on the season with the 50-41 win.
The Cougars will play host on Tuesday night (11/17) at 6:30 PM versus Solid Rock Academy. It will be Cottage School’s first ever GISA region contest; joining region 5AA for basketball this year.
