Varsity Mens Basketball Coaches:

Varsity Men's Basketball Head Coach Richie Briggs

Varsity Men's Basketball Head Coach Richie Briggs

Richie Briggs is in his fifth season as head coach for the Cottage School Cougar boy’s varsity basketball program.

In his first four years, Briggs has guided the Cougars to four straight playoff appearances, including the school’s first ever AAC Championship last season!

Briggs joined The Cottage School after serving two seasons as assistant girl’s basketball coach at Franklin County High School in Carnesville, Georgia, where he help lead the Lady Lions to a region championship in 2004 and back-to-back state playoff appearances in 2004-2005. His second year as coach, earned him assistant coach of the year honors.

Prior to coaching on the high school level, Briggs served four years coaching women’s college basketball. His first two years were at Emmanuel College, GA. as assistant women’s basketball coach and the next two years were at the University of West Georgia as graduate assistant coach for the Lady Braves (now Wolves). For Emmanuel College, he helped lead the Lady Lions to a region championship in 2001 and a 4th place finish at the NCCAA division one national championships. At West Georgia, he helped lead the 2003 Lady Wolves to their first playoff appearance in seven years.

Briggs played at Ambassador University, Texas from 1995-1997 and Emmanuel College, Georgia from 1997-1999, where he earned the honorable Coaches Award, and received a bachelor’s degree of sports management in 1999. He then earned his master’s degree of physical education in 2005 from the University of West Georgia.

“I am very excited and thankful for the opportunity to teach and coach here at The Cottage School. My vision when I arrived was to run a quality physical education and health department and to help guide the basketball program to success both on and off the court. I think with the students’ will to improve, both in skill and in self-confidence, we have accomplished this goal together. I am blessed to be a part of this amazing environment and plan to continue guiding these kids to be strong, confident, open-minded, and honest hard working citizens of the world.”

Richie Briggs is married to his lovely wife Nadine and they have two beautiful children.

Assistant Coach Brian Odom

During the 09-10 school year, Brian Odom begins his fifth year as the assistant coach for the Cougars of The Cottage School Varsity Men’s basketball team.

In his first year as assistant coach, Brian gained experience from working with his head coach, Richie Briggs, who brings experience from the college level to the program. Odom played a major role in the Cougars achieving the first AAC Basketball Championship for TCS in 2009. Under the guidance of Coach Briggs, Odom worked individually with several players to improve both their individual skill sets and their ability to come together and work effectively as a team.

Coaching with The Cottage School is the first official coaching position for Odom. His experiences as a 4-year letterman in high school and assistant team trainer in college (South Carolina’s women’s basketball) have helped to develop a willingness to teach and develop young athletes.

Odom graduated from the University of South Carolina in 2002 with a degree in Marketing/Management. He received a M.Ed and MBA from Strayer University.

“This experience has been more than I could ever imagine. Coaching at the high school level is extremely exciting, and I am willing to do whatever I can to improve my coaching abilities. Having the opportunity to coach under such a knowledgeable head coach is definitely going to benefit my ability to communicate with our players. I think this basketball season will be great!”
