Happy Birthday TCS trout! Our trout have all hatched and made it through their first two weeks of life! We have had an interesting series of events—including replacing the tank due to a leak! Luckily most of our small fry made it safely into their new home. Our new challenges include several ammonia spikes as bacteria cultures responsible for eliminating waste have not stabilized in the new tank.
Our trout continue to thrive and are currently digesting the egg sac they are born with. In this part of the life cycle, they are not developed enough to find their own food, and instead, digest the egg sac that remains attached to them while developing muscle tissue and sensory organs. In about a week or so, they will fully digest the sac, and we will begin feeding them dehydrated food.
We have lost some trout due to congenital and genetic deformities. Approximately 40 did not hatch from their eggs and others were born unable to swim properly. We also have a few “conjoined” fish—born sharing organs—one has two heads!
More updates next time!
