On August 17th The Cottage School greeted its newest member to the Cougar pack. Stephanie L. Gonzalez, of Cuban/Dominican descent, is the school’s first Community Relations Coordinator, focusing on bringing information to the Hispanic/Latino Community regarding the educational services available through The Cottage School for students with ADHD, learning disabilities and/or social/emotional issues.

As the Hispanic/Latino population continues to grow in the Metro Atlanta Area, The Cottage School is committed to creating lasting alliances with the Hispanic/Latino Community that will enable it to serve potential students, secure support from professionals, and create partnerships with community-based organizations.

“The Cottage School provides its students with an unparalleled educational experience, focusing on the student’s learning disability, and providing them with the tools necessary to be successful in life” states Gonzalez. “In the Hispanic Community there is an urgent need to address learning disabilities and highlight programs, services, and educational opportunities such as those provided by The Cottage School.”

The Cottage School was able to establish this position through a grant from The Goizueta Foundation.  The Goizueta Foundation has partnered with The Cottage School for more than six years and has assisted in providing financial aid to 20 minority students in order that they may benefit from TCS’s programs.

“In the 25 years we have been in the North Fulton area, we have seen that The Latino community is clearly underserved in the area of assistance with identification and remediation of academic needs,” states Executive Director Jacque Digieso, Ph.D. “Since education is the key to life-long success, we are committed to opening as many doors as we can for students that may be experiencing school failure due to their learning differences.  We are excited about the opportunities for partnerships and progress that Stephanie’s role can create.”

Gonzalez will work to establish relationships among key constituents in the Hispanic/Latino Community, raise the level of awareness about learning disabilities, and attract a more diverse student population.
